Tirah Campaign began in September 1897, with the attack of Samana ridge by the Tribals under the flag of Mullah Sayed Akbar of Tirah. This campaign was part of an overall uprising in the region against the "Kafirs" which started in Tochi valley in June 1897, with the killing of political officer, Mr. Gee and another British Officer in Datta Khel. It formed part of the general uprising in Mohamand, Malakand, Chakdara and as a matter of fact the whole of frontier. This may be considered as the last organized battle fought by the locals against the British designs to subdue the tribals and extend their frontiers to the borders of Afghanistan. The Durand Line had been delimited between Afghanistan and the then India in 1894. Tirah Campaign 1879-98 as such should be viewed with the angle that the British had finally taken action to subdue the locals of this area. Sir Winston Churchill had participated in this campaign as a young Officer of 4th Hussars acting as ADC to General Sir William Lockhart.
