No one in Pakistan can forget the humiliation caused to this country when Indians split us into two in 1971. No one can also forget the wild threats that were being thrust on this country in May 1998 - when Indians had exploded the nuclear devices, and Pakistan's nuclear program was being considered as a hoax. In those few days, Pakistanis had to listen to Indian generals and politicians as if they were about to run over the country of Pakistan. There was talk of permanent solution of Kashmir, of teaching lessons to Pakistan and much more. But the harsh tone suddenly changed into brotherly talk when Pakistan actually replied tit for tat and exploded nuclear devices of almost equal strength. Those explosions did a lot for the stability and betterment of Pakistan; in one jump they gave her the parity of weapons which was always lagging. As events proved later, the Indians, whether it was Kargil in 1 999 or the face to face stand off in 2002, will do very serious thinking before actually attacking Pakistan. As long as Pakistan has the deterrence sanity is bound to prevail on the Indian side. This is the power of nuclear deterrence.
