Serious allegations and counter allegations of corruption, misuse of power, nepotism and violation of all principles of good governance by two heavy weights of the ruling party (one the chief minister and. the other a Sindh minister) have been openly hurled at each other. Shaikh is next to Dr Rahim in the hierarchy of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League in Sindh in his capacity of the Secretary General of the party, Dr Arbab Rahim is the President. Following the lure of power both entered PML after the elections, leaving the Sindh Democratic Alliance in different ways, Imtiaz Shaikh, a bureaucrat-turned politician who was president of SDA through Chaudhry Shujaat and the powers that be, and Dr Rahim who was a leader of the same party, through Tariq Aziz and the powers that be. Both were strong contenders for the coveted slot of Chief Minister, which finally went to Arbab Rahim. Imtiaz Shaikh was made the provincial Revenue Minister under him. This is why this rift is being considered to be a result of old rivalry.
