It was a backlash by Iran's devoutly Muslim poor against a corrupt elite. It was a massive so-called 'fraud' perpetrated on the people by the hardliner clerics. Perhaps it is a bit of both. People voted against the socio-economic policies of the recent government i.e. rising unemployment ratios, high inflation and corruption, and voted in favour of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who promised a fair redistribution of national wealth. It was also a great setback to US foreign policy. The increasing incidents of insurgencies in Iraq, Afghanistan, the comfortable positions of Hezbollah and its allies in Lebanon's recently held election and last not the least, the landslide victory of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has already forced US to think about its current foreign policy.
