The Irish Republican Army (IRA) recently announced that it is ending its decade's old armed struggle against British rule in Northern Ireland and will now opt for peaceful means to achieve its objectives. As IRA ordered all its units to dump arms, Britain welcomed the move, and heaved a sigh of relief -as did the rest of the world. One can only hope that this time around the call to cease military activities will be more permanent than 1994 when a similar announcement was made that only lasted for 2 years and hostilities commenced in earnest. Thereafter in 1998 another agreement was signed (Good Friday Agreement) when Sinn Fenn, the political wing of the IRA opted for peace that led to a devolved administration in Northern Ireland.
