According to British sources the trial of tyrant extraordinaire Saddam Hussain, that was due to be held end of this month (October 2005), would be postponed until the elections are held in December 2005. Reasons for the delay were cited as 'practical ones' and not 'political' reasons i.e. bullet-proof screens and witness protection programmes had to be provided; why this was not planned much ahead is quite intriguing. The expected rise in violence before the planned referendum on the new Iraqi constitution on Oct 15 and also ahead of the December polls may also have propelled postponement of the scheduled October hearings. But apparently, there has been a change of plans and the trial is going ahead. Acting in some haste earlier this month five magistrates were chosen to adjudicate the cases against Saddam. Saddam Hussain is not the only one who will be facing charges as also accompanying him will be seven other members of his cabinet. They all face the death penalty if found guilty.
