The search for an appropriate and afforda ble Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) system by the PAF has been going on for over three decades. The matter assumed a far greater urgency when India finalized its own AEW&C system by signing a deal with Israel in 2003. The induction of Phalcon airborne radar system and its installation on Russian IL-76 platforms is in full swing and the system is likely to be made operational by 2008. Insufficient warning of seaward aerial raids has been PAF's Achilles' heel which the IAF was able to exploit successfully in the 1971 War. The ranges of ground based radars are limited by earth's curvature and for very low flying intruders the optimum pick up range barely exceeds 25 nautical miles. This range can be extended by deployment of shore based static balloon mounted radars or by mobile airborne platforms in the shape of AEW&C aircraft. Of the two, the AEW&C option is by far more versatile and cost effective.
