摘要

Speculation, fuelled in part by the President of the Board of Trade, has it that Portsmouth shipyard will close for build work (although maintenance work will be retained). Naturally, Portsmouth's economic future is at the fore of my mind, but I am equally concerned about sovereign capabilities and the affordability of the future fleet. The result of the last two decades of MoD policy is that we are not a country rich in terms of defence companies queuing up to build ships. Industry is keen to provide services for ships, but fails to realise that this is more likely if it builds them too. This makes things tough for a government that must fund the future fleet, but the difficulties of UK industry must not be allowed to shape such important strategic decisions. We must be able to build our own ships and find the budget to do so. Portsmouth is well placed to support both requirements.
