It is now almost 40 years since Norio Taniguchi first coined the term 'nano-technology' in the context of precision engineering of materials. Since that time nanotechnology has become a multifaceted scientific discipline that has had a huge impact on a wide range of scientific and commercial endeavours, and yet as we enter a fifth decade of nanotechnology we can anticipate that the best is yet to come.
