摘要

While small in size, military awards can mean the world to service personnel, veterans or their next of kin. They are a physical commemoration and appreciation of the courage and fortitude shown by the soldier, sailor, airman, or civilian, awarded to a select few across years of service. They are a tangible memory, to be worn with honour and shown to younger generations with pride. The continued significance of awards was outlined last year in an independent review of the medal policy carried out by Sir John Holmes in May and June 2012, the recommendations of which were presented to the Houses of Commons and Lords in July. The review looked at the general process of medal allocation, as well as several contentious cases from past years, concluding that there was room for greater flexibility and transparency.
