The Royal Navy's Fleet Diving Squadron provides deployable specialised diving units across the UK and overseas. These units are based in Faslane, Portsmouth and Plymouth, and are organised into Northern, Southern and Fleet Diving Groups (NDG, SDG and FDG). FDG conducts specialist roles and supports international operations, whilst NDG and SDG cover UK operations. Their work is characterised by technical ability, professionalism and an acceptance of risk - and not just with regard to their diving. In addition to their role as underwater engineers, Royal Navy divers continue the tradition of explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) that began during the mining campaign launched by the Italian Navy on Gibraltar in 1942.
