摘要

The number of females serving in the military has been steadily increasing for many years, with each woman providing vital and important contributions to operations in all three services. Despite this, there remain some restrictions on the roles they can take in the services; while 9% of Royal Navy personnel are female, women have previously not been allowed to work in submarines. However, following an 18 month review of the situation, it was announced in December 2011 that both sexes will be able to work together on Royal Navy submarines for the first time in history. It was previously thought that conditions upon submarines were detrimental to female health, owing to elevated levels of carbon dioxide. Following an extensive investigation into the evidence behind this line of thinking (as well as the legal, operational, social, technical and financial implications of introducing female submarine operatives), it has been decided that these previous assertions were false, and that submarine environments posed no particular health risks to females.
