There is a natural tendency during the early stages of the aircraft design process to concentrate on the basics required for initial certification and relegate the effects of icing to 'something that can be addressed later'.Whilst this statement may not be true for the well-established major manufacturers, icing is a complex discipline with numerous pitfalls for companies that do not enlist the advice of in-house or external icing experts at an early stage. The global proliferation of UAV manufacturers has led to numerous new entrants, either in the form of new companies or as new product lines for existing manufacturers. In the past, experience with new companies entering the 'general aviation' market has shown that ignoring or understating the effects of icing during the initial design or even concept period can lead to performance compromises, as well as additional cost and complexity when icing certification is eventually addressed. The signs are that history is repeating itself to some extent in the field of UAVs.
