There is no reason to think the ongoing growth in the development and deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will slow. In these days of austerity, the unmanned platform offers significant cost savings while at the same time delivering operational advantages. On the other hand, with the major task of UAVs to provide a platform for collection of full motion video (FMV), the tendency to focus on new and better, faster, lighter birds, or on ever more image pixels are distractions from the real end-game of delivering information. What this author argues for is a shared view of unmanned aerial systems (UASs) where the UAV platform - the 'vehicle' - is just an enabler, albeit an important one, in a complete system for Imagery Intelligence (MINT) service delivery.
