The difficult air threat (DAT) has emerged as one of the major target sets to be handled by any new ground-based air defence (GBAD) system, such as that which may be procured by the UK MoD under the Network Enabled Airspace Defence and Surveillance (NEADS) programme. Any such system must be capable of being networked with higher echelon command nodes and be able to detect and defeat an evolving set of targets.Rheinmetall Air Defence developed the Oerlikon Skyshield C-RAM System, not only as a valid C-RAM solution but also to counter future developments in the field of DAT and the kinds of missions that could be faced by GBAD forces in the next two decades.
