Never have there been so many 'improvised explosives' to disarm and make safe, and the challenge is everywhere, not just in Afghanistan.The explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) officer now has a significant range of options to deal with these devices. The preferred equipment is, of course, the use of unmanned vehicles or protective vehicles with sophisticated manipulation devices. Only when all else fails does the EOD officer need to get 'up close and familiar' with the device. It is in this situation that the operator requires the best protection we can provide him.
