摘要

Since the 1960s, the market for Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) aircraft has been continuously shrinking, which has caused many aerospace firms to stop manufacturing them. During World War II, Europe and North America saw extensive build-up of airfields and airbases, and after the war many of those airfields were converted into civilian airports with long, paved runways. In the meantime, the development of helicopters filled the gap in aviation services that demanded takeoff and landing operations outside established airfields. Both developments, in aerodrome infrastructure and in helicopter technology, seemed to effectively kill any need for STOL aircraft - so will the need for STOL capabilities vanish totally in the 21st Century?
