Across Whitehall there is now a belated acceptance that unless the UK, as a nation, grasps the nettle of fiscal restraint then the sun will finally set on her days of international political, military and economic influence. Even with the current high levels of operational commitments, and irrespective of the outcome of May's election, defence was always going to be under the microscope as an easy potential target for substantial Treasury savings. However, the Ministry of Defence may have cause to embrace the forthcoming Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR), assuming its findings expose the new government to the hideous dichotomy of the last decade - where weakened political influence and a stagnant budget have hamstrung operational effectiveness and cost British lives.
