It was the Duke of Wellington who, in 1812, ordered the establishment of the Royal School of Military Engineering (RSME) in Chatham. During the Peninsular War, he had observed the high level of casualties suffered by the Royal Engineers, or Sappers as they are colloquially known, as a result of the need to instruct them on their engineer tasks whilst under enemy fire. So the RSME was given the task of training and educating Royal Engineer Officers and soldiers in all aspects of military engineering, a task unchanged to this day.rnSappers have three roles: they are soldiers, combat engineers and construction engineers, and their training is designed around those three disciplines. Combat engineer training of all officers and soldiers is undertaken at the RSME's Combat Engineer School at Minley near Camberley in Surrey and all technical engineer training for officers and soldiers is undertaken at the RSME's Construction Engineer School in Medway, Kent, where instruction is provided in all artisan skills and civil, electrical and mechanical engineering up to postgraduate level.
