In the century and a half since the Crimean War, military strategy has changed out of all recognition. Gone are the days of set-piece battles between armies raised by nation states, easily identified by flamboyant uniforms and flags, and where there was a clear winner. Conflicts like those in the Balkans, Sudan and Afghanistan have been between groups who are not readily identifiable from the rest of the population, where the conflict is as much over ethnicity, belief or religion as the traditional motives of control of territory or economic enrichment, and where the conflict is unlikely to end on a particular day when a ceasefire is declared. The skills needed by the professional in the armed forces are also very different to those in the Crimea, when officers were selected for their social standing and the troops were expected to display unquestioning loyalty and compliance with orders.
