The persistence and future of the North AtlanticTreaty Association (NATO) have long been topics of interest for scholars of international relations and security studies. In Understanding NATO in the 21st Century: Alliance Strategies, Security and Global Governance; Graeme P. Herd and John Kriendler (eds.) offer a brief discussion of some of this scholarly literature, but focus primarily on policy issues related to a potential third "Transatlantic Bargain." Preceded by introductory and historical chapters, and followed by a concluding chapter by the editors, each of the 10 chapters penned by contributors grapples with a longstanding conceptual issue facing the Alliance. Most of these issues are enduring; some are emerging but related to deep questions of alliance politics.
