Ehud Eilam's Israel's Way of War: A Strategic and Operational Analysis, 1948-2014 is an exemplary case of a very Israeli genre. Israel has never published a formal security policy, and the taskof interpreting and publicising the country's security tenets therefore fell into the hands of retired senior officers and several motivated civilians, who outlined their outlook in books that mostly reflected personal views and lacked a clear, explicit theoretical framework, not to mention methodology. The contemporary reader, who must be fluent in Hebrew, as that is the language in which the vast majority of these books were published, may feel that the founders and later interpreters of Israel's security policy and thought were highly inward-looking, believing their country's security problems and the domestic"solutions"are both sui generis, and that the local security elite to be often disinclined to learn from others' experience.
