One must admire the ambition of a book that aims, in 278 pages, to explore the pre-history, current usage, and future prospects of the theory and practice of geopolitics. Such ambition entails difficult choices about the scope and depth of its coverage. In Geopolitics and the Quest for Dominance, Jeremy Black navigates these choices with a clear grasp of the analytical complexity of the challenge: his approach is both conceptual and practical; it recognises the significance of political statecraft, as well as the contribution of intellectuals qua geopolitical thinkers; and it emphasises the impact of geopolitics as "a durable mindset and a set of doctrines that have outlasted major changes in ideology and international power"(p. 4).
