What defines cohesion in professional combat soldiers? How and why do modern tactical military units fight? Anthony King's recent work The Combat Soldier: Infantry Tactics and Cohesion in the Twentieth and Twenty-First Centuries is addressing these questions, through in-depth historical and contemporary sociological analysis. Drawing his analysis from a vast array of cases, both cross-nationally (US, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, and Italy) and cross-chronically (WW1,WW2, Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan), he is able to paint a very detailed analysis of how infantry tactics changed during the twentieth century and how unit cohesion changed with it.
