摘要

Andrew Mumford's debut monograph provides the reader with an impressive macro-level overview of the modern British counter-insurgency experience, from Malaya to Iraq. Dispelling the British 'counter-insurgency myth', his central argument can be summed up simply as 'the British are not as good at counter-insurgency as was previously assumed' (p. 153). This is not necessarily a new idea and in recent years a number of academics have begun questioning the British legacy, particularly regarding Malaya. What Mumford's book achieves, however, is its placement of the British experience within a historical lineage. His holistic approach allows the reader to understand each insurgency (all too often considered in isolation) within the broader context not only of the British experience but so too of the evolving international system. Portraying Aden as a turning point, assessing Northern Ireland against the backdrop of colonial insurgencies, and understanding Iraq within the context of the British tradition provides a fresh perspective.
