Since its initial planning stages in the early 1980s, the A400M military transporter aircraft has been considered to be a flagship European collaborative procurement project. It gained political symbolism as the representation of the new beginning to European defence and security launched by the 1998 Franco-British Saint Malo Agreement, and became an integral part of the subsequent development of the European, now, Common Security and Defence Policy (ESDP/CSDP) by showing sceptical onlookers that the Europeans were serious about addressing equipment gaps.
