Long-running procurement contracts already in place are forcing manufacturers to look further into the future when designing new systems for tactical trucks. Duncan Sellars of the American Truck Company tells DSI Army about the emerging prototypes of tomorrow's technology. The US Military has long-standing contracts in place for its fleet of trucks. These vehicles are now being put to severe tests in Afghanistan and, more recently, in Iraq. The duration of these procurement contracts has had an effect on the strategies of both competing manufacturers and the military. The major impact of these long-standing contracts has been that truck manufacturers are forced to focus their development resources on trucks with the next wave of innovative battlefield systems in place, in order to prepare for the next round of military procurement tenders. Military customers are also looking to the future with new design briefs for those manufacturers, based on feedback on vehicle performance in the field.
