In ships, submarines, aircraft, tanks and other land vehicles, computing technology faces a physical environment that is potentially far more hazardous than that which portable computers normally face. There is the possibility of physical shocks, extremes of temperature, humidity, dust and water, and nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) contamination/decontamination. In addition, there is the issue of electromagnetic radiation from a force's own equipment and deliberate jamming from opponents. So, when it comes to computer systems, defence personnel need ruggedness. Soldiers, safety personnel and field technicians use in-vehicle computers to satisfy a variety of requirements, such as situational awareness, digital mapping, NBC detection/alarming and GPS, and they need to know that the equipment will survive a challenging environment.
