High frequency radio (HF) is increasingly becoming the battlefield's dependable means of long-range, quick, tactical communications, especially when paired with SATCOM and Blue Force Tracker. Conventional VHF and UHF, plus mobile subscriber equipment (MSE) are line of sight (LOS) methods of communicating, but today's rapidly moving, wide-ranging forces quickly outstrip LOS. Fortunately, HF is not limited to either distance or terrain and with today's excellent family of radios, from companies such as Harris, Motorola, Rockwell-Collins and Thales-Mackay, all of whom include both automatic link establishment (ALE) and digital secure communications capabilities, HF gives the battlefield commander a reliable voice and data contact with his/her deployed forces, regardless of their location.
