US Pres. Barack Obama's commitment on May 6,2014, to provide assistance to the Nigerian Government's efforts to find and rescue some 300 schoolgirls kidnapped by insurgent group Boko Haram on the night of April 14,2014, should be expected to have some ramifications not anticipated by either government. But what was significant was that foreign governmental concern - and particularly the US White House offer of support - did not come until almost three weeks after the Boko Haram attack, and then only after extensive social media exposure - and Western public reaction - to the crime.
