South Africa: South African voters went to the polls on May 7,2014, in Parliamentary and provincial elections. The incumbent African National Congress (ANC) share of the national vote had, by early on May 8, 2014, reached more than 60 percent, guaranteeing it a further term in office. The elections were for 400 seats in the lower house of the national Parliament, the National Assembly, and for the legislatures of all nine provincial legislatures. Thailand: The Constitutional Court of Thailand on May 7, 2014, ruled that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra had "abused her power" when she transferred a civil servant - the Secretary-General of the National Security Council, Thawil Pliensri - to another post in 2011, and ruled that she should step down immediately from office along with nine members of her cabinet who were in government at the time of the transfer. Prime Minister Yingluck's Phak Phuea Thai Party (PTP) immediately announced that Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Niwattumrong Boonsongpaisan would become Acting Prime Minister, although a party spokesman said that the court's decision was "a new form of coup d'etat". It was the third time since 2006 that a prime minister from the movement now known as the PTP had been removed by a court order.
