The US White House seemed ready to risk war over Ukraine, and staged an expensive "sound and light" African Summit, all in order to impact the mid-term US Congressional elections, coming up in November 2014. This was President Barack Obama's last chance to dominate the US political agenda; if he loses both houses of Congress in November, he stands to see the reversal of much of his authority. He could even face impeachment.
