One man has been the consistent thread in stabilizing Iranian relations with the Arab world since the 1970s, and later between Iran and the West: Sultan Qaboos bin Sa'id Al bu Sa'id. Unmentioned in the captions of photographs circulated in November 2014 of US Secretary of State John Kerry with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif- meeting in Muscat, the Omani capital - was the slender figure of the grey-haired Sultan Qaboos, now 73, and showing evidence of his recent illness. He returned from medical treatment in Germany to shepherd the talks through to a photo-opportunity between Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and US Sec. of State John Kerry.
