The growing Cold War-style divisions between the US and Russia over the issue of Ukraine highlighted, in 2014, the vulnerability which the US space program had allowed itself by depending so heavily on Russian rocket motors for its launch vehicles. The issue, however, resonated internationally, and the issue of launch autonomy is being viewed as a factor in national security.
