Afghanistan: Afghanistan Presidential candidates Abdullah Abdullah, 54, and Ashraf Ghani, 65, finalized a power- sharing agreement on September 20, 2014, ending months of tension over the unresolved election, and on September 21, 2014, officially signed the pact in a ceremony with outgoing Pres. Hamid Karzai at the Presidential Palace in Kabul. Teams for both candidates met late into the night of September 20, 2014, with UN representatives to try to finalize the deal before Afghanistan's Independent Election Commission (IEC) announced the final election results on September 21,2014. The last sticking point was how to announce the results of the June 14,2014, run-off election vote audit. Abdullah, who was widely assumed to be trailing Ghani, had reportedly insisted that the official percentages of the vote either not be made public at all or be altered to give him more votes. The IEC ultimately decided not to reveal the vote tallies, but declared Ghani the President-elect just hours after the agreement was signed. Mr Abdullah took on the newly-created position of Chief Executive Officer, essentially prime minister. Pres.-elect Ghani was sworn in on September 29. 2014.
