Great, Regularly-Produced Reference Books are always a Wel-come addition to an analyst's library; they give a sense of being au courant and capable of handling current situations. The delivery of the 19th Edition of The [US] Naval Institute Guide to Ships and Aircraft of the US Fleet, then, was doubly welcome because it comes at a time when the world -- and the US strategic position -- is in flux. The author, the redoubtable Norman Polmar, noted in his introduction: "This edition of Ships and Aircraft, the ninth that I have produced, in many ways has been the most difficult. It appears as the US Navy is undergoing changes that are in many respect more dramatic and extensive than at any time since the end of World War Ⅱ."
