Since independence and up until now Ukraine has tried to shape its security priorities and to define and implement key policies into its main security-related documents: laws, strategies, and defense policy ("military doctrine"). Significant evolution can be noted since gaining independence. From the slightly naive and idealistic documents of the 1990s, Ukraine has moved forward to determine a detailed and sober definition of national interests and security priorities. The war with Russia since 2014 has also put an end to the Ukrainian policy of balancing between the West and Russia. It has clearly defined its priorities and orientation towards NATO and the EU. Moreover, Ukraine continues to invest in preserving its ambitious role of being a regional and global security contributor.
