A Platonic idea about a work of art, which has been expressed in various forms over the centuries, is that a great work of art is one from which nothing can be taken away and to which nothing can be added without destroying its merit. That's a very classical idea, seeming to suggest that the ideal has been closely approached, and seems defensible in the case of many buildings that we love. The Parthenon (Athens, 477-432 BC) would definitely not look right with an addition on one side of it, and neither would the Roman Pantheon (Rome, 118-126 AD). The same can be said of Ludwig Mies van der Rohes's Seagram Building (1954-1958) in New York, and his Farnsworth or Fox River House (1946-1951) in rural Illinois. French Gothic cathedrals (11th - 13th centuries and after), on the other hand, have had additions, completions and alterations time after time, often in quite different styles and forms, and still command the love and admiration of many people. The cathedral at Chartres (circa 1194-1220, with a tower added 1507-1514) provides a good example. Bruce Goff s Price Studio, one of his great masterpieces, had two separate expansions, one when the client married and had a child, and the second to accommodate Mr. Price's large and growing collection of Japanese art.
