As great as the promise of service design may be, as little has it had to show for itself as a separate discipline of designing. One reason for this may be the strong influx into this field of user-centred designers, who adopted a view of users as highly pro-active and co-productive, and who discovered the service domain as a playing field eager to embrace them. Such a perspective on users was already central to service research and development, but designers offered new approaches and tools that allowed for more creative forms of user involvement. The joint creativity of designers, providers, and users, however, is supported mostly by rather crude and perishable materials, with the post-it note reaching iconic status in this field. The paper trail that service designers leave behind is hardly worth exhibiting on a service design exhibition.
