The Design of Design: Essays from a Computer Scientist, Frederick P. Brooks, Addison Wesley/ Pearson Education (2010) 421pp., ISBN: 9780201362985, £25.99 Fred Brooks is a computer scientist and software engineer, perhaps best known for his book The Mythical Man-Month (1975) in which he formulated 'Brooks' Law' of project management that adding man-power to a software project that is running late just makes it later. His paper 'No Silver Bullet: Essence and accidents of software engineering' (1986) is also widely known in software design. Much of his reputation rests upon his experiences in leading the development of IBM's System/360 computers and operating systems in the 1960's. So when he writes a book on design it commands some attention. (The title will be recognisable to many, because it is borrowed from Gordon Glegg's much earlier book.)
