摘要

Introduction More than 30% of dialysis patients suffer from uncontrollable thirst (xerostomia). Thirst and xerostomia are one of the most significant and the most commonly observed symptoms in patients undergoing hemodialysis, and it affects the quality of life. Sugarless Chewing gum and sugarless candy are very effective in decreasing the xerostomia in these patients, due to increasing of the saliva flow. This study aimed to compare the effect of sugarless chewing gum with sugarless candy in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Materials and Methods :This study was a semi-empirical study. Sixty hemodialysis patient who met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into three groups. In the first group, thirsty patients used sugarless chewing gum for a week, and in the second group, they used sugarless candy for a week. The control group did not receive any intervention. Xerostomia was determined by using xerostomia index (XI). After the intervention, the patient’s xerostomia index was measured. SPSS software version 22 was used to analyze the data. Results There was a significant difference concerning?the xerostomia of the patients before and after intervention in both of the intervention groups ( p <0.05), while there was no significant difference in the control group ( p > 0.05). After the intervention, there were significant differences in the xerostomia index between the three groups ( p <0.05). These differences were not observed before the intervention. Conclusion This study confirmed the effects of sugarless chewing gum and sugarless candy on?reducing xerostomia in hemodialysis patients. These methods are applicable in patients with xerostomia?due to other various etiologies.
