Malay which spans many centuries and has been passed down through generations either ubat-ubatan(medicine) and healing –orally or in written form – is a complex andholistic practice.Traditional Malay medicine incorporates principles and practices of pharmacology that are highly dependent onindigenous ?ora and fauna found in thewild.1 Age-old literature and manuscripts– although scarce in number – documentthe ways in which plants, animals andminerals2 native to the Malay Archipelagohave been part and parcel of its healingpractices. At the heart of Malayubat-ubatanis the amalgamation of complex Islamic andHindu beliefs and practices presided overby traditional or faith healers.
