Implementing Computer Supported Collaborate Learning Activities within the Context of an Environmental Education Project

The purpose of this survey was to evaluate whether or not the Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) activities were effective for the acquisition of new knowledge and of collaboration skills by the students, so that they could be used as a teaching approach for environmental education’s projects. The survey was conducted among 22 students from 12 to 16 years old of a Greek lower secondary school in Attica, in the school year 2005-06. The data was collected according to the principles of qualitative methodology, using individual semi-structured interviews with the participants in order to investigate their views in depth. Research findings led to the conclusions that: a) CSCL activities facilitate collaboration among the students. The web based activities such as: exchange of e-mails, participation in forum, creation of material for websites motivated students in acquiring new knowledge, b) the synchronous and asynchronous communication tools encourage interaction between the remote students groups, c) students acquired new knowledge and skills from the planned activities concerning environmental issues, English language and the use of computer and d) students attitudes toward the application of CSCL activities were positive because they consider them as an effective teaching approach, which can be also applied in classroom.
