Dr. E. E. Southard, first director of the Boston Psychopathic Hospital and professor of neuropathology in the Harvard Medical School, was also a man with many other interests. His influence was widely felt in philosophy, psychology, psychiatric social-service and chess playing. This well-written biography by a close friend is a welcome addition to medical literature. It is a source of value for a study of both American psychiatry and as biography of one of the leaders in medical advancement.
