MIss BEEM: Members of the Medical Library Association: The large number of questions which I have makes it unwise for me to take your time with a long preliminary speech. I am going to make a few suggestions regarding the answers to the questions and then read the questions, because they are all of general interest relating to the three special types of libraries. I believe the particular value in having the question box is that many of the librarians are isolated. They are in places distant from large centers, where the librarian is the only medical librarain in that state or in that particular region. This interchange of ideas is well to have because we all have our troubles. A great many medical librarians are people who are untrained and inexperienced. They were shot into the libraries in some emergency, not intending to follow up library work as a career. They went in for the relief of some pending situation and for that reason the salaries were low and they did not have the opportunity of visiting the North and East where the larger centers are located to get observation, experience and training. As for meetings, travelling expenses are not paid, and, because salaries are low, they cannot afford to come long distances.
