Avian Demographic Responses to Drought and Fire: A Community‐Level Perspective

Drought can impact wildlife directly, through effects on vegetation productivityand resource availability, and indirectly, by creating conditions conducive to dis-turbance, such as wildfire. We assessed trends and predicted changes in droughtconditions in the Four Corners region of the southwestern United States andeffects of drought and wildfire on vegetation greenness and avian demography.Drought was associated with reduced greenness, avian productivity, and survival.Fire had mixed effects: initially reducing greenness and avian productivity, followedby increases in greenness and productivity several years post- fire. Our resultshighlight important links between environment, vegetation, and wildlife that willlikely affect population trajectories under climate change.
