The theme of this year’s annual meeting is Extreme Events, Ecosystem Resilience, and Human Well-being. Sessions in New Orleans explore how the impacts of events such as heat waves, droughts, floods,fires, and storms are made worse by human activities and land- use practices. They further consider howour well- being depends on maintaining ecosystem resilience, so that ecosystem functions (and henceecosystem services) are not compromised by such events.This year’s theme offers rich ground for further exploration of the history of ecology and alliedsciences. One prominent message, reiterated throughout the past century in response to environmentalchange, is the need for cross- disciplinary synthesis of ecology and other disciplines.
