摘要

Pathogens are ubiquitous. If pathogens increase with preferred host(s), theymay suppress common species and benefit rare species, promoting species diver-sity. Despite their proposed importance, the impacts, identities, and host rangesof pathogens in natural communities are relatively unknown. We identified foliarfungal pathogens and evaluated host specificity and fitness impacts in a Califor-nia grassland. Contrary to prevailing hypotheses, most pathogens were relativelyunspecialized, caused damage that was independent of host relative abundance, and had weak fitness impacts. Together, this suggests that foliar fungal pathogensare unlikely to promote negative frequency dependence or plant species coexis-tence in this California grassland.
