Towards community-driven paleogeographic reconstructions: integrating open-access paleogeographic and paleobiology data with plate tectonics

A variety of paleogeographic reconstructions have been published, withapplications ranging from paleoclimate, ocean circulation and faunalradiation models to resource exploration; yet their uncertainties remaindifficult to assess as they are generally presented as low-resolution staticmaps. We present a methodology for ground-truthing the digitalPalaeogeographic Atlas of Australia by linking the GPlates plate reconstruction toolto the global Paleobiology Database and a Phanerozoic plate motion model. Wedevelop a spatio-temporal data mining workflow to validate the PhanerozoicPalaeogeographic Atlas of Australia with paleoenvironments derived fromfossil data. While there is general agreement between fossil data and thepaleogeographic model, the methodology highlights key inconsistencies. TheEarly Devonian paleogeographic model of southeastern Australiainsufficiently describes the Emsian inundation that may be refined usingbiofacies distributions. Additionally, the paleogeographic model and fossildata can be used to strengthen numerical models, such as the dynamictopography and the associated inundation of eastern Australia during theCretaceous. Although paleobiology data provide constraints only forpaleoenvironments with high preservation potential of organisms, ourapproach enables the use of additional proxy data to generate improvedpaleogeographic reconstructions.
