Wilderness medicine (WM) is a relatively unfamiliararea of medicine to most health care professionals inthis country. However, most medical practitioners inCanada have at some point delivered care in less thanideal circumstances. These situations might includeremote locations distant from definitive care or underexposure to severe weather or natural hazards. Anymedical practitioner could face circumstances whereresources are overwhelmed by major disasters, pandemics, or civil unrest. Given that this kind of care isdelivered almost daily elsewhere in the world, there is agrowing movement in Canada to recognize andformalize principles and practices unique to suchdemanding situations. Although several names havebeen given to this type of medicine, it is most oftenreferred to as wilderness medicine within NorthAmerica.
